In 2023, during its G20 Presidency, India launched the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA)—a global platform to promote cleaner, sustainable fuels. This move put India in a leadership position in the worldwide shift toward renewable energy.
What is the Global Biofuels Alliance?
The GBA brings together 32 countries and 14 major global institutions (including the World Bank, IEA, and IRENA) to:
Promote the use of sustainable biofuels
Share best practices and technical know-how
Set global standards and certification systems
Create a virtual marketplace connecting producers, users, and technology providers
Why India’s Role is Important
India’s leadership benefits both the country and the world:
Energy Security: Achieving E20 ethanol blending by 2025 can save ₹45,000 crore and reduce oil imports by 63 million tons annually.
Economic Growth: Strengthens domestic green initiatives like SATAT, GOBARdhan, and PM-JIVAN Yojna.
Global Influence: Hosting the GBA secretariat in New Delhi positions India as a key decision-maker in clean energy policy.
Key Milestones
October 2024: Host Country Agreement signed to set up the GBA Secretariat in India.
July 2025: Governance structure finalized, making GBA a fully functioning international organization.
Participation in major events like COP28, COP29, and the World Economic Forum.
Released whitepapers on non-grain biofuels and bio-based diesel, along with awareness campaigns such as “Do You Know."
The Big Picture
India’s role in the GBA is about more than sustainability—it’s about driving global change while ensuring national economic gains. By combining domestic innovation with global collaboration, India is setting the standard for a cleaner, greener future.
